For Immediate Release

Notepad.exe 1.5.0 Rebuilds Its AI Coding Assistant and Adds ChatGPT Sign-In

July 12, 2026

Independent developer Marcin Krzyzanowski today released Notepad.exe 1.5.0, its biggest update since launch. The release rewrites the built-in AI coding assistant, lets developers sign in with a ChatGPT subscription instead of an API key, makes Go and TypeScript first-class, and extends Linux cross-compilation across languages.

Doctor Marvin, rebuilt

The headline change is a full rewrite of the coding assistant. Answers now stream in as they are written, and the assistant can build and run a project, read the output, and edit files to help fix errors without leaving the app.

"The assistant should do the boring loop for you: build, read the error, make the change, run it again," says Krzyzanowski. "That is the loop that used to pull you out of the editor. Now it happens right where you are working."

Notepad AI, out of the box

The assistant is ready as soon as it opens. Developers can sign in with a ChatGPT Plus or Pro subscription and use it with no API key, keep using "ChatGPT (API)" with their own keys, or pick from a wider range of cloud and local models.

What is included

Same editor, more reach

The 1.5.0 update follows earlier releases that added Python, Linux support, JavaScript through Bun, on-device coding intelligence, and Go. Notepad.exe keeps the same rule for each addition: write code in a note, run it, and only add structure when the work needs it.

For developers who move between small scripts, server experiments, and Apple platform work, the rebuilt assistant and broader language support reduce the need to switch tools just to try something quickly or to get unstuck.

"The point is not to replace every specialist tool. The point is to make the first ten minutes of coding much faster, and now to keep you moving when something breaks."

Availability

Notepad.exe 1.5.0 is available now as a free update for existing users. New users can download the app at notepadexe.com. Paid plans start at $19.99 per year, with a $79 perpetual license also available. Students and educators can apply for academic access.

System requirements: macOS 15.0 (Sequoia) or later.
