Independent developer Marcin Krzyzanowski today announced Notepad.exe 1.0, a native macOS code editor for quick Swift experiments. The app lets developers write Swift in a note, run it locally, and keep useful snippets in a searchable library.
"I created Notepad.exe to solve a problem I kept running into," says Krzyzanowski. "Sometimes I wanted to test a Swift idea without creating a project, choosing targets, and waiting for a full IDE. I wanted something closer to a notepad that could run the code."
Notepad.exe starts with a blank note and a run button. Users can keep a small experiment lightweight, or add packages and settings later if the note turns into something bigger.
"The name Notepad.exe comes from the core idea. It is essentially a notepad that can execute your code. I wanted it to feel lightweight and familiar, but still run what you are writing."
Krzyzanowski plans regular updates after the 1.0 launch. The near-term roadmap includes expanded macOS runtime support and iOS development tools.
"Version 1.0 is useful today, but it is also the base for more Apple platform work. The hard part is adding capability without losing the reason the app exists: open it, write code, run it."
Notepad.exe 1.0 is available at notepadexe.com with two pricing options: a $19.99/year subscription or a one-time lifetime license. See notepadexe.com/purchase for current pricing.

"I really dig the Notes Library and the ability to pin a window to the front. Love the included assist too. Cot does too little for me, Xcode is overkill for small things so I really love this."
"It's an excellent small code editor to explore all your Swift ideas without launching a heavy IDE like Xcode. And the option to create an image for quickly sharing a piece of code on social networks is just perfect!"
